Nonprofits Create Community is NIA’s theme for 2026, as we celebrate the ways that nonprofits come through for their communities in spite of all the challenges facing them. In this series, meet some NIA-insured nonprofits who share their stories of creating community in their own words.

Meet Valor Ranch of Decatur, TX

Keri Anne Wilcox, Founder & CEO of Valor Ranch, explains:

“Valor Ranch empowers female veterans by providing a safe, supportive environment for healing, personal growth, and long-term stability through community, connection, and purpose.”

How does your nonprofit and your mission create community for the people and places you serve?

Creating connections grounded in trust, accountability, and encouragement.

“At Valor Ranch, we create community by fostering a safe, healing-centered environment where female veterans in transition can reconnect with themselves and others. Through our “Home of the Sheroes” program, we provide more than transitional housing — we cultivate a sense of belonging, purpose, and mutual support.

Our approach is rooted in relationship-building and shared experience. Women who come to Valor Ranch often face isolation, trauma, or instability.

By living and growing together in a supportive ranch setting, they form a sisterhood grounded in trust, accountability, and encouragement. This peer-based community becomes a powerful foundation for healing and personal growth.

We also extend our impact beyond our residents by engaging the broader community through partnerships, volunteer involvement, and local resource networks. These connections help bridge gaps for rural populations and ensure the women we serve are integrated into a wider circle of support.

Ultimately, our mission creates community by transforming individual journeys into collective strength.

At Valor Ranch, every woman is empowered to rediscover her voice, build meaningful relationships, and become part of a lasting network of support — both within our program and in the community she helps strengthen.”

What are your nonprofit’s biggest challenges or obstacles to creating community?

Overcoming isolation and limited access to resources, transportation, and support.

“One of the biggest challenges Valor Ranch faces in creating community is operating in a rural environment, where access to resources, transportation, and support services can be limited.

Many of the women we serve — female veterans — arrive feeling isolated, making it more difficult to immediately build trust and connection.

Additionally, the individuals we support often carry complex experiences such as trauma, housing instability, or prolonged disconnection from support systems.

Creating a sense of community in this context requires a trauma-informed, highly individualized approach, which can be resource-intensive and requires consistent funding and trained support.

Another challenge is raising awareness about the unique needs of female veterans, who are often underserved and underrepresented in traditional programming. Without widespread recognition, it can be difficult to secure the partnerships and funding necessary to expand our reach.

Despite these obstacles, we remain committed to overcoming barriers by building strong local partnerships, fostering peer support among residents, and creating a welcoming, relationship-centered environment where community can grow organically and sustainably.”
