Meet Sierra Senior Services of Truckee, CA
Vivian Ruiz, Executive Director of Sierra Senior Services, explains:
“At Sierra Senior Services, our mission is to deliver nutritious meals to older adults facing food insecurity, which reduces isolation and enables them to continue living independently for as long as safely possible.”
How does your nonprofit and your mission create community for the people and places you serve?
Letting seniors know they are seen, valued, and never alone.
“At Sierra Senior Services, the local Meals on Wheels provider serving older adults across the mountain communities of Truckee, North Lake Tahoe, and Incline Village, we know that a meal is never just a meal. It is a knock on the door, a warm smile, a conversation, and the reassurance that someone cares.
For many of the seniors we serve, our volunteers are the only person they may see all day. Every meal we deliver provides nutritious food, but just as importantly, it offers connection, compassion, and a daily wellness check that helps older adults remain safe and independent in their own homes.
Community also comes to life through our congregate dining program, where seniors gather to share a meal, celebrate milestones, laugh with friends, and build meaningful relationships. These moments help reduce isolation and remind people that they belong.
While our service area spans three counties across California and Nevada, our mission remains deeply personal. We work alongside healthcare providers, local businesses, community organizations, and dedicated volunteers because creating community takes all of us.
Whether we are delivering meals during severe winter storms, providing daily wellness checks, or simply taking a few extra minutes to listen, every interaction is an opportunity to let someone know they are seen, valued, and never alone.
Creating community is at the heart of everything we do. We are not simply delivering meals. We are delivering dignity, independence, hope, and the comfort of knowing that someone cares.”
What are your nonprofit’s biggest challenges or obstacles to creating community?
Long travel distances, social isolation, and rising costs.
“Serving a large rural mountain region presents unique challenges. Long travel distances, severe winter weather, rising food and transportation costs, and an increasing demand for services make it difficult to reach every senior who needs us.
Social isolation continues to be one of the greatest challenges facing older adults in our communities. Many seniors live alone, have limited transportation, or are unable to participate in community activities due to health or mobility limitations.
Despite these challenges, we continue to strengthen partnerships, recruit volunteers, seek sustainable funding, and develop innovative ways to connect with older adults so they can remain healthy, independent, and engaged in the communities they call home.”
