Alzheimer’s and dementia don’t discriminate — they affect all communities equally. When patients are diagnosed with memory or cognitive disorders, they and their loved ones often depend on the care and support that their local nonprofit Alzheimer’s organization provides.
These nonprofits can provide patients with safe places to participate in therapeutic activities, socialization, receive advocacy services, and more. They also provide families with caregiver support and resources to help them be there for their loved ones throughout the journey.
But, like all nonprofits, Alzheimer’s and dementia support organizations need dependable insurance coverage in order to safely serve their communities.
While every nonprofit needs insurance, each one has different needs: So, when it comes to their insurance, what is most important to Alzheimer’s and dementia organizations?
Meet an Alzheimer’s and dementia organization insured by NIA.
We talked with an NIA member that serves Alzheimer’s patients and their families about what they are doing in their community, and how NIA’s partnership has helped them achieve that mission.
The George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers
Based in San Diego, CA, the George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers has a mission to provide affordable and accessible adult day care and support services to families affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of memory impairment diseases.
They accomplish this by providing innovative adult day care programs, family support, case management, crisis intervention, family and community education, advocacy, information, and referrals.
How did this nonprofit Alzheimer’s organization hear about NIA?
According to CFO Fernando Moscoso, George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers originally learned about NIA through a recommendation from Cavignac, an insurance advisory organization, back in 2002.
In the years since, George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers have renewed their coverage exclusively with NIA, year after year.
What did the Alzheimer’s organization need most from their insurer when choosing NIA?
According to Moscoso, whose duties as CFO include ensuring that the George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers are on a sound financial path, there are two things that matter most when it comes to insurance — the price of insurance and the quality of coverage.
That’s why they’ve trusted NIA as their insurer for 22 years.
Since becoming an NIA member, how has that relationship helped this Alzheimer’s and dementia organization?
Moscoso explained that, in addition to “the best insurance rates and coverage,” the George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers also have greatly benefitted from NIA’s free and discounted risk management services.
A partner who’s in it for the long haul.
What makes NIA the preferred choice to insure nonprofit Alzheimer’s and dementia organizations?
It’s simple: Reliability.
Nonprofits want to focus on their missions, not wonder if their insurance is going to renew them or not every year. Alzheimer’s and dementia organizations want an insurer that understands that the services they provide and the risks they face — and stays by their side year after year.
More than 95 percent of nonprofits insured by NIA renew each year, giving them much-needed peace of mind that these organizations often do not have in the volatile commercial insurance market.
