Gig economy got you down? Is your CEO’s oversized ego is risking your job? Want to do work for a company that makes a difference in the world? Want to work from your home, or in Santa Cruz, California?
Consider an underwriter position with Nonprofits Insurance Alliance (NIA)!
Whether you’re an experienced underwriter looking for your next big career move or a recent college graduate interested in learning the ropes, NIA is looking to hire underwriters.
You’ll enjoy competitive pay and great benefits, in a company with policies and a management structure that have been designed around a central pillar of fairness.
And… you’ll be making a difference in the world, with the knowledge that you’ll be working to uplift communities — and not some billionaire’s bank account.
Are You an Experienced Underwriter?
At a time when other insurance carriers are downsizing, Nonprofits Insurance Alliance (NIA) is upsizing.
If you’ve had experience working for a commercial insurance carrier, you’ve seen first-hand how business practices designed to maximize profits and satisfy stockholders can negatively impact your most vulnerable clients.
With NIA, you’ll be encouraged to use your skill and experience to expertly evaluate the risk posed by each organization and figure out how to offer them the coverage they need for their work in their communities.

“The mindset is different”
“I love the fact that while the underwriting process is similar, the mindset is different. We need to make good underwriting decisions for the benefit our members. In the past, while underwriting for commercial carriers, decisions were focused on shareholders and target returns.
It is refreshing that our underwriting goals are in alignment with the nonprofits we serve.”

I’m New — What Does an Underwriter Do?
NIA underwriters work closely with brokers across the country, guiding them through each step of the process to secure the insurance their nonprofit clients need to serve their communities.
As an underwriter, your eagle eyes will look at all aspects of a nonprofit organization — its staff, its mission, its budget, its policies, its property, and even its location — as you work to evaluate their unique insurance exposures and help determine premiums and customized coverages that are designed to fit.
Quality Underwriter Training Provided
If you’re new to the idea of being an underwriter — no worries! Even if your experience level is “a fresh college degree and a positive attitude,” NIA might be the place for you to start to learn the business as an Underwriting Support Specialist.
Certification Sponsorship: A Commitment To Your Growth
NIA is committed to helping team members grow and advance, providing numerous opportunities for continuing education and certification sponsorship that can help you take your career to the next level.
For underwriters and associate underwriters, that commitment means that NIA will pay for you to obtain your licenses and certifications so you can maintain your skills, gain new knowledge, and move up within the organization.

Underwriting is “A Much Different Experience…”
“After working for almost 20 years with various commercial carriers that provided insurance coverage for nonprofit risks, one would think it’s all the same. Working at NIA has proven this is not the case — it has been a much different experience. NIA embodies their “heart for nonprofits” mission. Every day, I am in awe of the approach that we take when reviewing our submission and renewals.
‘How can we find a way to provide coverage for this nonprofit?’ — I must admit, I had never asked myself that question in my prior life.
At NIA, we try to do what’s best for the nonprofit, rather than ask how much premium we can charge.
It has been quite the mind shift since I started here, but it has also been a fulfilling experience where, at the end of the day, I feel like I have made a difference to those who really need it.”
