What types of 501(c)(3) nonprofits does NIA insure?
Who does NIA insure?
Unlike any other insurer, NIA writes coverage exclusively for 501(c)(3) organizations of all sizes.
NIA writes coverage for a wide variety of classes of business — including those that brokers often find difficult to place.
NIA cannot insure:
- Nonprofit types other than 501(c)(3), such as 501(c)(4), 501(c)(6), etc. Examples: Cemeteries, funeral homes, homeowners or condo associations, political action committees or groups, unions
- Athletic leagues, competitive travel teams
- Boy Scouts / Girl Scouts troops
- Campgrounds, retreats
- Certain types of housing assistance: Supportive housing for the homeless in large city centers, hotel occupancies, single room occupancies without supportive services*
- Chambers of commerce, trade associations, or homeowners’ associations
- Churches, synagogues, temples, or organizations whose primary purpose is to promote the specific teachings or beliefs of a specific religion or person
- Lockdown / detainment facilities, or facilities whose primary purpose is to hold people against their will
- Foster family agencies*
- Fraternities, sororities
- Medical: Ambulance services, birth centers, blood banks, EMS, first aid squads, hospitals, medical marijuana dispensaries, non-ambulatory / nursing care facilities (hospice is an exception), physicians
- Mountain bike / motorcross groups
- Nonprofit developers that build with the intent to sell
- Nonprofits with heavy transportation exposures or large vehicle fleets*
- Nonprofits whose primary purpose is to take a position on abortion or pro-life
- Private schools that do not serve an underprivileged student body
- Recovery: Detox facilities, methadone clinics, residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation and recovery, sober living facilities*
- Saddle animal coverage (where this is the primary focus of the org, or animals are offered for hire)
- Youth residential treatment, short-term residential therapeutic programs
- Zoos
Possible exceptions to the above:
NIA can consider 501(c)(3) nonprofits that are only affiliated with the types of organizations above.
Examples of affiliated organizations: Food banks / pantries / thrift stores connected to churches, foundations that benefit zoos, or supporting organizations.
