Daycare Centers: Insurance Explained

What do nonprofits that operate daycare centers need the most from their insurance?

With missions that can serve children or adults, nonprofit daycare centers provide a place of safety and support. But they can’t operate without insurance — so we asked some real NIA members which coverages matter most to them.

For children and adults with special needs alike, local nonprofit daycare centers provide a safe and reliable place where they can be supervised, fed, enjoy enrichment activities, and more while their parent(s) or guardians are working.

Like all nonprofits, each of these daycare centers need insurance to operate — but, because their missions include work with children, seniors, and people with disabilities, they also need additional types of mission-specific coverages, too. “One-size-fits-all” coverage usually isn’t enough.

So, what do nonprofit daycare centers need most from their insurance?

Meet some nonprofit daycare centers.

We talked with several NIA-insured nonprofit daycare centers, from all different parts of the country, about what they need most from their insurance coverage — and their insurance provider — to help serve their communities.

In their own words…

Alzheimer’s Family Center (Huntington Beach, CA)

“Alzheimer’s Family Center provides compassionate, innovative care for individuals with dementia and vital support for their caregivers.

Through adult day health care, counseling, and specialized programs, we enhance quality of life, promote dignity, and help families navigate the challenges of memory loss with strength, resilience, and hope.

We provide personalized services such as nursing care, speech therapy, physical and occupational therapy, dietitian consultations, and access to a medical director, pharmacist, and social worker.

Our care team works closely with patients’ primary care physicians to ensure seamless, integrated care.

Additionally, we offer an outpatient behavioral health program that provides caregiver counseling, support groups, and individual therapy, helping families cope with the emotional challenges of caregiving while improving their well-being and resilience.”

Aimee Ruiz, HR Manager, Alzheimer’s Family Center

The Inspired Community Project (Bronx, NY)

“We are a Bronx-based, full-day behavioral therapy daycare program for up to 75 neurodivergent children, while providing early intervention services, speech and occupational therapies in our community sensory gym.

We also have our Family Advocacy Coaching Supports (FACS) program that supports families of neurodivergent children as they navigate the complicated systems of special education services within NYC.

We are also New York state’s first and only behavioral health apprenticeship program, with our first cohort of 14 apprentices will graduate as registered behavior apprentices.”

The Arc of Amador and Calaveras (Sutter Creek, CA)

“The mission of The Arc of Amador and Calaveras is to provide support and services to persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, so they can better learn, work, live, and recreate in the mainstream of life.

Our programs include community integration adult day services, recreation services, and employment services.”

What did these nonprofit daycare centers need most from their insurer?

Strong coverage for a sensitive mission.

“When looking for insurance coverage, our nonprofit’s most important need is ensuring comprehensive protection for both our staff and the individuals we serve.

Given the sensitive nature of our work with dementia patients, it is crucial to have liability coverage, worker’s compensation, and coverage for professional errors, as well as protection for our facility.

We also need coverage that supports our volunteer program and special events, ensuring that we can continue to provide care and services without risk to our organization’s financial stability.

As a nonprofit with a limited budget in an uncertain economy, where the cost of everything — including insurance — has drastically increased, securing affordable coverage has been a significant challenge.”

Aimee Ruiz, Alzheimer’s Family Center

Consistent, reliable coverage.

“To ensure that we can focus our attention on the work that we do, we need insurance coverage that is consistent, reliable, and — most importantly — comes from a place that aligns with our mission, vision, and values.”

Jillian Moses, The Inspired Community Project

An insurance provider that understands nonprofits.

“We need a company that understands the nonprofit community, offers relevant and affordable coverage, and has expanded resources to help support operations — employment law consulting, trainings, etc.”

How did these nonprofit daycare centers hear about NIA?

A longtime partnership.

“We have been insured by NIA for many years now.”

Recommendation from other nonprofits.

“We had a lot of difficulty and confusion with another insurance company, and we ended up lapsing because there was confusion with our renewal dates. When we began searching, NIA was highly recommended to us from a couple other nonprofit leaders.”

An original NIA member organization.

“Our organization has been with NIAC (Nonprofits Insurance Alliance of California) since 1989. Our insurance broker recommended us.”

Karyn Gregorius, The Arc of Amador and Calaveras

Since becoming an NIA member, how has that relationship helped these nonprofit daycare centers?

Insurance from a true partner to nonprofits.

“Before partnering with NIA, we struggled with finding affordable, comprehensive coverage. Many carriers either didn’t understand the nature of nonprofit work or were hesitant to insure us altogether.

The cost of coverage was often prohibitive, and we found ourselves choosing between high premiums or inadequate protection.

With NIA, we not only gained access to a carrier that understands the nonprofit sector, but we also found a partner committed to helping us manage risk without compromising our mission.

It’s clear that they’re not just an insurance provider — they’re a true partner in helping us fulfill our mission.

A key benefit we’ve discovered is the peace of mind that comes from knowing we’re supported by a team that prioritizes transparency, integrity, and nonprofit values.

Their resources, trainings, and risk management tools have been incredibly helpful in strengthening our operations and reducing potential liabilities.

What stands out most is NIA’s commitment to empowering nonprofits, not just insuring them. That sense of shared purpose makes a real difference.

Their support has made it possible for us to focus more energy and resources on serving our community, rather than navigating the complexities and costs of insurance alone.”

Aimee Ruiz, Alzheimer’s Family Center

An insurer with nonprofit values.

“I like knowing that the people at NIA have the same nonprofit values that we do.

We really appreciate having people that fully understand what it means to be a nonprofit and that enables us to focus on supporting our growth — and the discounts help us stay on budget.”

Jillian Moses, The Inspired Community Project

Quality service and access to helpful resources.

“Over the many years we have been with NIA, our experience has been excellent. Claims are processed quickly. Emails and phone calls are responded to immediately. Each representative we have worked with has been friendly and helpful.

As a small nonprofit in a rural area, we are grateful for the free and discounted risk management services and utilize them frequently to maintain compliance.

The risk management services we participate in include the discounted access to the employee handbook builder, the risk management consulting services, the driver program and trainings, the harassment prevention training, and various webinars.”

Nonprofit daycare centers need an insurer that provides some peace of mind.

Why do nonprofit daycare centers get their insurance coverage from NIA?

It’s easy: Nonprofit daycare centers provide working families with quality care, affordable prices, and peace of mind — and that’s what nonprofits need their insurance carrier to provide for them.

NIA provides nonprofit daycare centers with the coverages that meet their specific risks, connects them with additional resources to help them reduce those risks, and has an expert team that’s accessible and responsive — all at prices that are fair and equitable.

After all, when you’ve got a mission to provide peace of mind, you deserve a little peace of mind, too.
